Cincinnati Legend of Golf – Judy Hayes

By Mark Schmetzer Judy Diem Hayes has compiled an impressive list of accomplishments in her 71 years of playing golf, but she needed 70 of them to log one of her proudest moments. Playing the par-3, 112-yard 14th hole on May 25, 2018, at Coldstream Country Club, her home course, Hayes pulled out her 7-iron and carded the first hole-in-one of her life. “That’s my one claim to fame as I slowly fade into the sunset,” Hayes said recently during a phone conversation. “At age 80, I had my first hole-in-one and

By Mark Schmetzer Renee Obial describes herself as a theme person, so it was natural for her to create one for her term as Greater Cincinnati Women’s Golf Association president. Comisar Cup Kicked Off This Summer

By Mark Schmetzer Anybody who’s ever played golf in Greater Cincinnati or, for that matter, Ohio very likely knows the name Joan Comisar. Now, her legacy is being further burnished at her golfing home, Kenwood Country Club. Women there will compete annually to have their names added to the Comisar Cup, which honors three flight champions in each of nine- and 18-hole tournaments that serve as the club championships. Fall Team Results

By Mark Schmetzer Lori Roberts believes one reason Hamilton Elks Country Club has enjoyed a recent run of success in Greater Cincinnati Women’s Golf Association events is softball. She and many of her teammates on the Elks played the sport growing up. “I really think it helps your hand-eye coordination.” Robert said. Roberts served as captain for the Elks team that pulled away from Kenwood Country Club to win the Division I-level championship of the five-event GCWGA Fall Team tournament. Crystal Bowl At Camargo A Big Success

By Mark Schmetzer A few years ago, Bev Weeks walked up to Patti Horne at a golf event and said, “You know, you look a lot like a sorority sister of mine, Marcia Guest.” Horne replied, “That’s because she’s my sister. To paraphrase the last line from the classic movie, “Casablanca,” that was the start of what has turned into a beautiful golf friendship – one that’s gaining momentum.
