Keenie

Carol Clark Johnson’s most well-known nickname is “Keenie,” but there was a time when “little,” “tiny” and even “diminutive” all came into play. That’s how she often was described in local newspaper accounts of her competition exploits, but the references were only to her stature and contradict the impact she’s had on golf – not just locally, but around the world. Besides being a trailblazer for female athletes, the Wyoming native earned renown for her efforts in helping establish the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and her relentless approach to teaching golf.

President’s 2020 plans

By Mark Schmetzer The Greater Cincinnati Women’s Golf Association presidency traditionally is a one-year term, but Renee Obial got so much done last year and still has much she hopes to accomplish this year, so she agreed when asked to stick around for another year. “It was challenging, but I think we came out wonderfully,” she said when asked to assess her first year in office. “That’s why they wanted me to stay. I wanted to get a better handle on things, and I was able to accomplish that, so now I

2019 Fall team results

By Mark Schmetzer Diane Rottinghaus couldn’t figure out which was the cake and which was the icing. Diane Stevens was just relieved. Rottinghaus was captain of the Miami View team that rolled to an impressive seven-point win over Kenwood in the 2019 Fall Team Division I tournament. Miami View took the lead in Week One of the five-week tournament, taking advantage of playing on its home course, and pulled away over the next month, but what the title-winning team found just as sweet was finishing ahead of perennial powerhouse Hamilton Elks, the

SHE Tournament Results

By Mark Schmetzer Nancy Sander’s assessment was as, um, earthy as it was accurate. Sander and her Miami View teammates – Diane Sundrup, Molly Ziegler and Claire Martini – for the 2019 SHE Tournament had opened with a solid performance on the 10th hole on September 9 at Blue Ash Golf Course. The par-3 11th was another matter, according to Sundrup. “We were thrilled,” Sundrup said of the group’s general mood after No. 10. “We’re like, ‘We’re doing great.’ No. 11 is a par-3 over water. Molly and Claire both went into

By Mark Schmetzer Winning the Crystal Bowl High Handicap Net competition was so unexpected that Connie Toole felt compelled to confirm it. She checked in with the duo with whom they’d played the Coldstream Country Club course. “I even asked them later, ‘Can you believe we won?’” said Toole, who partnered with Diana Oberschmidt. “They said, ‘Well, you did hit the ball well.’” 1st low net - 2nd flight - Connie Toole, Diana Oberschmidt Toole and her Ivy Hills Country Club partner played well enough to edge the teams of

By Mark Schmetzer Sandy Stuckert and her Wetherington Golf & Country Club teammates were surprised to be recognized as winners of this year’s High Kent Low Gross tournament at Oasis Golf Club. Why? “We were originally announced as the second-place Low Net winners,” Stuckert, the team captain, said. “We actually went up for them to present us the Low Net awards. Then they went back and said, ‘Oh, wait, you won first-place gross.’” First place low gross (l to r):Sandy Stuckert, Mary Blake, Donna Harpsoe, Kathleen Johns Stuckert and teammates

2019 Low Kent Winners

By Mark Schmetzer Lynn Thompson, Janice Kunkemoeller and their Low Kent teammates had plenty of reasons to be pleased with how their June 27th went at Heritage Country Club. Topping the list? Their win in the Low Gross half of the tournament. Thompson and her O’Bannon Creek Golf mate, Holly Jones, and Kunkemoeller and her Terrace Park Country Club partner, Nancy Decenso, teamed up to shoot a combined 154 and ease past the Hamilton Elks Golf Club foursome of Vicki Felver, Linda Coffey, Hilda Hodges and Lori Roberts. Women’s Met Preview – Hyde Park CC

By Mark Schmetzer If you haven’t been to Hyde Park Country Club for the past, oh, couple of years, well, you might not recognize the place. Located on Erie Avenue, Hyde Park completed in February a $12 million renovation that included the women’s clubhouse, the kitchen, the swimming pool, the outdoor dining area, the golf practice area and moving the six tennis courts while adding pickleball and paddleball courts. “The last major renovation was in 1998,” general manager Eric O’Bryan said. “In order to do the practice area, we had to move
