HIGH KENT at Maketewah Country Club July

To say it was beginner’s luck would be inaccurate, since all of the team members have played golf for years, but for a few members of the winning teams at the 2020 High Kent tournament on July 21, their inaugural rounds at Maketewah Country Club proved to be particularly rewarding. The Kenwood Country Club team of Captain Ginger Lippmeier-Suarez and Dawn Bertsche, Beth Gianetti and Karen Hjelm won the High Kent 1st Low Gross championship over the second-place team of Captain Diane Rottinghaus, Kim Rollinger, Diane Sundrup and Lynn Torbeck from Miami

2020 Low Kent at Western Hills Country Club (July 17, 2020)

Unae Mueller recalls not playing very well in her first couple of rounds at Western Hills Country Club. She and her Four Bridges Country Club teammates – Ali Green, Diane Bizzarri and Denise Wareham – helped her on June 13 to form a better memory. They teamed up to get past the team of Lynn Thompson, Holly Jones, Diane Meiners and Nancy DeCenso and win the Low Gross portion of the Greater Cincinnati Women’s Golf Association Low Kent Memorial tournament. Four Bridges Country Club “This is the biggest event I’ve

Wildcats dominated the 105th Women’s Met at Wetherington Golf and Country Club

Marissa Wenzler University of Kentucky sophomore Marissa Wenzler came from behind on the second day of the two-day, 36-hole medal-play tournament to edge future UK teammate Laney Frye by two strokes at the par-72 Wetherington Golf and Country Club. The competition didn’t escape UK’s notice. This was posted on the women’s golf team’s Facebook page: “We’re out here collecting trophies this summer. “Marissa Wenzler won the 105th Metropolitan Women's Amateur Championship June 10-11, in West Chester, Ohio. And guess who finished just behind her in second? Incoming freshman Laney Frye.

Olga Weil

Mark Schmetzer By Mark Schmetzer “We Are a Go for Launch” the Greater Cincinnati Golf Association announced triumphantly on its website after the Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that golf could resume after being suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That meant local women could look forward to competing in the 105th Metropolitan Women’s Amateur Championship June 10-11 at Wetherington Golf and Country Club in West Chester. The eventual winner could look forward to challenging Olga Weil’s record of Met championships. Good luck. Olga Weil, often referred to in newspaper

Keenie

Carol Clark Johnson’s most well-known nickname is “Keenie,” but there was a time when “little,” “tiny” and even “diminutive” all came into play. That’s how she often was described in local newspaper accounts of her competition exploits, but the references were only to her stature and contradict the impact she’s had on golf – not just locally, but around the world. Besides being a trailblazer for female athletes, the Wyoming native earned renown for her efforts in helping establish the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and her relentless approach to teaching golf.

President’s 2020 plans

By Mark Schmetzer The Greater Cincinnati Women’s Golf Association presidency traditionally is a one-year term, but Renee Obial got so much done last year and still has much she hopes to accomplish this year, so she agreed when asked to stick around for another year. “It was challenging, but I think we came out wonderfully,” she said when asked to assess her first year in office. “That’s why they wanted me to stay. I wanted to get a better handle on things, and I was able to accomplish that, so now I

2019 Fall team results

By Mark Schmetzer Diane Rottinghaus couldn’t figure out which was the cake and which was the icing. Diane Stevens was just relieved. Rottinghaus was captain of the Miami View team that rolled to an impressive seven-point win over Kenwood in the 2019 Fall Team Division I tournament. Miami View took the lead in Week One of the five-week tournament, taking advantage of playing on its home course, and pulled away over the next month, but what the title-winning team found just as sweet was finishing ahead of perennial powerhouse Hamilton Elks, the

SHE Tournament Results

By Mark Schmetzer Nancy Sander’s assessment was as, um, earthy as it was accurate. Sander and her Miami View teammates – Diane Sundrup, Molly Ziegler and Claire Martini – for the 2019 SHE Tournament had opened with a solid performance on the 10th hole on September 9 at Blue Ash Golf Course. The par-3 11th was another matter, according to Sundrup. “We were thrilled,” Sundrup said of the group’s general mood after No. 10. “We’re like, ‘We’re doing great.’ No. 11 is a par-3 over water. Molly and Claire both went into
